“It makes me stronger coming here”.

This is what Rita feels since she has started studying at University. She also realizes that although she might buy a new dress and have a lot of money, she has nothing after all. Because what she really needs for her life is to enrich her culture with something more important than a simple dress.
Having started to study feeds her inside. I think that what she wants to explain is that studying makes her free to make decisions, to feel autonomous when choosing what is better for her life. Studying feeds her inside because she feels motivated as she has her own opinion about things.
On the contrary, she decides to go ahead despite her husband does not support her. He does not like her studying and tries to persuade her, inviting her to go on having the same vulgar life she does not want to have it anymore, she wants to break away and has her own life, that is to say, she wants to do what she really makes her happy.
I totally agree with Rita when she says that her husband is frightened of her going to study.
He knows that, whether he likes it or not, Rita would not be the same woman he met some years ago.

Hello Gi! Yes, I totally agree with you when you refer to Rita's husbancd, he is a bit afraid of Rita's improvement, because I think that in a way he would feel weaker than her.
In my opinion, education makes people stronger!
What do you think Gi?
See you!

Do Rita's feelings (this "makes-me-stronger" thing, you know) have anything to do with Frank's teaching, Giyo? Or do you believe any kind of teaching empowers learners?

No wonder Denny feels threatened: you yourself have said Rita now wants to "have her own life", leaving him behind, and even looking down upon what they've been building together! Do you think school (Frank, in this case) should take any responsibility upon this "side effect" of formal education? Or is this Rita's own personal problem, and school (Frank) should focus just on subject-matter teaching and learning?

Hi Gla!
I think that Frank is partly responsible for Rita's changes...
I believe that Frank is teaching Rita to make desicions, to think on her own, to be confident with herself, etc...and all that have empowered Rita, motivating her to go on!
By experience, I must say that school shouldn't focus just on subject-matter teaching and learning...
People are not robots, which the most important goal for them is to collect information at school...
the same happens with teachers, they are not robots either...as Frank, who has also suffered many changes since he first met Rita.
As in Educating Rita, teachers and students learn from each other!

I love it when you say Frank's job is to empower Rita, Giyo, as that's the way I see teaching too, you know!

I know you'll work hard and always be ready to give your best so that many learners are empowered... Your students will be lucky, I say!

All the best,
Gladys

PS: have you noticed you used the expression "suffered changes" when talking about Frank... The collocation is perfect, but made me wonder: when will we start saying "enjoyed changes"??? ;-P!!!
