Rita and Frank

The relationship between Rita and Frank takes place in Frank’s book-lined study.
Rita thinks that Frank’s room is what she would like to have it in the future.
Although she thinks it is a mess, she feels that everything have been put to fit there.
She seems to be very comfortable in his room because she likes walking around, going to the window and back to his desk, maybe she feels free there or just because she is doing something for herself.
When she goes to the window, she can see from the window what she calls the PROPER STUDENTS. She believes that they are the ones who spend their lives reading and studying and are well-dressed. A dream that she could not achieve when she was at primary school because for her studying was just for those who had the chance to do it.
She feels that if she had studied, she would have become different from her mates and family, and maybe, she did not do that because she wanted to go on belonging to her group of people and did not make upset anyone around her due to a significant change education would bring about her.

Hi Giyo!

Think about it: Frank is depressed, has given in to drinking heavily... Do you believe his room is actually as "perfect" as Rita seems to find it? Why is it she wants to "fit" here?

As for the "proper students", I'd say you've seen them exactly through Rita's eyes (IMHO). Now, what socio-economic class does "spend their lives reading and studying and are well-dressed" imply? Could Rita have been or one of them just by studying hard? Can she now become one of them? And, as you yourself have noticed, will this bring about rejection by her own people?

Big questions, aren't they? Don't worry, Willy Russell will answer them for you as you get through this great play!

Take care,

Gladys

Hi Gla!
I think she wants to fit there because she has her own purpose:
To learn everything...

Maybe she is used to drinking with her husband and she does not matter what Frank does it in his room...
The socio-economic class that spend their lives studying, reading and are well-dressed seems to be the ones that belong to high societies or this is what maybe she believes it is.

I think that her low self-esteem does not allow her to see that she can belong to the same group of people, who she feels never would not fit in...
hope you understand me...
big hug!
